He is one of the most important presidents of the United States that we have ever had and played a vitally important role in the abolition of slavery in the United States. Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States. He was born on February 12, 1809 in Kentucky. Lincoln educated himself using borrowed books. He never went to a formal school. At age 25 he got into politics and became an Illinois legislator. He began studying the law and worked as a lawyer, and later became a U.S. Congressman, but then lost trying to become a Senator. He argued against slavery, and fought hard his whole life to end that practice. In 1860 he became President of the United States and during his term the United States broke out into a Civil War largely because of differing views about Slavery. During the War Lincoln singed the Emancipation Proclamation which lead to the 13th Amendment and eventually helped abolish Slavery and freed millions of slaves. At the height of the Civil War he gave one of the most famous speeches in History...The Gettysburg Address. He was instrumental in the Civil War Victory and changed the path of history forever.
