This music composition lesson explains one of the rules of writing four-part harmony, namely the advice to avoid doubling major chords, and goes on to explain how to identify them in a piece of music. When writing four part harmony, particular attention should be paid to the use of thirds in chords. Thirds should normally be included but, while minor thirds can be doubled, the advice is to avoid the doubling of major thirds. We present a passage of four-part harmony that includes quite a number of chords which infringe the rule and show you how to identify the doubled major thirds and how to alter the layout of chords to correct the problem. Useful for all engaged in the writing of harmony. \n
