William, Duke of Normandy and King Hardrada of Norway both lay claim to the throne and begin preparations for separate invasions. Hardrada’s viking army lands in northern England. Bolstered by recruits from Tostig Godwinson, King Harold’s own brother, the Viking armada seizes York. King Harold and his army hurry north, taking the Vikings by surprise at the Battle of Stamford Bridge. With their armor still on their ships, the Norwegians are at a disadvantage and fall to the English. Tostig and King Hardrada are slain. Three days later, King Harold receives word that William, Duke of Normandy, has landed on the southern coast. The Battle of Hastings will soon be underway, forever changing the history of England and beyond.\n
