The prize to be won; the English crown. King Harold defends the high ground with his infantry in a shield-wall formation. William takes the field with infantry and mounted knights, bolstered by archers. The Battle of Hastings begins. The English line holds throughout the day, with the Normans sustaining heavy casualties. Exhausted and impatient, English forces pursue the Normans as they retreat, exposing their flank to the enemy. When a rumor spreads that William has been killed, the English break rank and advance deeper into Norman lines. William emerges on a horse and leads a counterattack that overwhelms the English. King Harold dies in the melee, some say with an arrow buried in his eye. By nightfall, the English army is no more. Christmas Day 1066 - William the Conqueror, the bastard descendant of viking pirates is crowned the King of England.
