Skeletal muscle metabolism of branched chain amino acids, and degradation of purines and pyrimidines leads to the production of ammonium and other nitrogenous wastes. Since the urea cycle does not occur in muscle, the skeletal muscle cannot process the ammonium directly, and thus the skeletal muscle incorporates the ammonium into alanine and glutamine, which are transported to the liver and processed.

********NOTE: 2 Mistakes have been identified in this lesson.
1) Alanine aminotransferase is abbreviated ALT, not AST... AST is actually aspartate aminotransferase
2) The last step in gluconeogenesis in the liver is performed by glucose-6-phosphatase, NOT glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase.

In this lesson, you will learn about the importance of the glucose-alanine cycle, how nitrogenous waste is produced and “stored” in the skeletal muscle in the form of alanine and glutamine, and how alanine and glutamine are processed in the liver to recycle the carbon skeleton and nitrogenous waste in gluconeogenesis and the urea cycle, respectively.\n
