High early morning glucose levels can become a problem in management of blood sugars for diabetic patients. Glucose levels normally fluctuate throughout the day; however, two causes can lead to high levels of glucose early in the morning before breakfast: 1) the dawn phenomenon, and 2) the somogyi effect. In this lesson, we discuss what the hormonal regulation of glucose and how changes in hormone levels cause the dawn phenomenon and somogyi effect.\n
