An important part of the art of conversation is nonverbal communication skills (note: some people write it \"nonverbal tips\" and others write it \"non-verbal tips\")
Here are the three nonverbal communication skills:
1. Raise your pointer finger. This is a great body language tip. Raised low, about chest height. Don't raise your whole hand. That looks young. People will see that you are ready to speak and essentially hold a place for you to speak on the next talking turn or so. Gestures like this are effective because body language helps regulate the flow of communication.

2. Lean forward several inches and audibly inhale. This is what assertive people naturally do before they speak. Try it for fun in a meeting and watch everybody turn and wait for you to speak. In fact, I have used these non-verbal communication tips as a little experiment and this tip works great. Be sure you have something to say!

3. Look directly at the person speaking, nod a little extra, and begin to vocalize. Don't say anything specific. Just make basic utterances such as \"Yeah. Uh huh. Uh huh.\" As their talking turn comes to a close, you are already driving up the on-ramp to your verbal comment. You'll have no problem getting in the conversation. You're making sounds but these count as non-verbal communication tips because you're not really making genuine words. You're just indicating that you're listening and getting ready to verbally communicate. To master the art of conversation, these small nonverbal communication behaviors make a big difference.

These non-verbal communication tips will help you just into any conversation or group meeting without seeming pushy. They all build on the natural non-verbal communication skills that extroverted people do without realizing it.\n
