Eye contact is one of the best ways to connect with others in conversations. Few of us these days do it very well. Preoccupation, our phones, and social anxiety make direct eye contact awkward. Three eye contact tips will help you strive to do better.
1. Set a goal of making eye contact 80% of the time you're in a one-on-one conversation. Eye contact skills do not develop on their own. You have to make it a priority by setting some goals.

2. Keep your eyes and facial expression warm. Nobody likes looking at a stone-faced person. Part of eye contact skills is involving the whole face. So, warm it up. Smile. Use other good nonverbal communication.

3. Break eye contact every 2 to 3 sentences to keep it comfortable. People don't like 100% eye contact. That's not natural. Breaking away ever few sentences will keep it comfortable. Eye contact is in conversations is different than presentations or groups. In conversations, you have to look away some of the time.

I've seen some eye contact tips that encourage people to do other weird things like look at the person's forehead. That's bad advice. Stick to the basics. You can build your eye contact skills with a little practice.\n
