A quadratic equation is an equation whose highest power on its variable(s) is 2. The discriminant of a quadratic equation is a formula which is used to determine the type of roots (solutions) the quadratic equation have. The discriminant of a quadratic equation is given by d = b^2 - 4ac, where a is the coefficient of the quadratic term (x^2), b is the coefficient of the linear term (x) and c is the constant term. If the discriminant is a positive number, then the quadratic equation will have two real and distinct roots. If the discriminant is equal to 0, then the quadratic equation has two real and equal roots. If the discriminant is a negative number, then the quadratic equation will have two complex roots. Note that the quadratic equation must be set equal to 0 before a, b, and c can be extracted. If the quadratic equation is not set equal to 0, then all the terms of the equation is taken to one side of the equality sign so that the other side of the equality sign will be 0.\n
