Today’s ideas will help you get creatively specific in your brainstorming, so it will not only help General Training students for Task 1, but also all students for Task 2.

In order to get high scores for Task Achievement (Task 1) and Task Response (Task 2), the examiner must see your ability to dive deeply into an idea.

This means that you shouldn’t crowd your paragraphs with too many ideas or reasons; rather, you should focus on going into deep detail about just one idea.

A student shared a question he recently faced on the IELTS Exam:

You have recently experienced a problem with a rental house.

In your letter, write about:

The problem
What you did about it
What you want the landlord to do

When brainstorming, try to go with the first idea you think of. You don’t have time to search for the “perfect idea”. Plus, there is no perfect idea!

The problem

When I first moved in, the water coming out of all the faucets was brown.
Thought it was rust from disuse
Continued for the last 5 days, since I moved in June 5th
Pay $50 water/sewage fee, should have clean water

What I did

Ran water for 1 hour to clear
Guilt and shame, I’m eco-conscious
Checked online, Water Bureau, for warnings, there were none

Want landlord to do

Clean up problem
Deliver fresh water to my doorstep post haste
Provide potable water today
I can come to office to pick up

That brainstorm provides all the detail I will need when I write my letter.

So, when I write, I don’t have to come up with information. I just have focus on vocabulary and organization!
