Recently, a student told me about a table she had to describe, and she wasn’t sure where to put some of the numbers in her essay.

It was a table about education levels in different countries.

There were 3 columns, representing the number of degrees (Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PHD’s) in those countries.

Then, there was a fourth column stating the total number of degrees.

This fourth column, therefore, presented a different type of information than the other three, and she thought that she did not have to include it in her essay.

However, not mentioning this column at all would garner a 4 for Task Achievement!

This happens in table questions sometimes, where there’ll be a column that is the ‘total’ or the ‘average’ of the other numbers presented.

If you see this, you can put the highest number from that column as a conclusion paragraph.

(Remember, though, usually you will not write a conclusion in Task 1.)

Another option is to use the highest and/or lowest numbers from those categories as your overall trend.

If you have pie charts, and there is an ‘other’ category, this is also different kind of information, because it is not specific.

I recommend putting the ‘other’ category at the end of the body paragraph which is about that pie chart.

Don’t forget today’s information, because it’s vital to scoring well in Task Achievement!\n
