If you are coming to IELTS from an academic writing background or from preparing for other tests like TOEFL you may have different ideas about how to prepare but IELTS is unique. You cannot use the same strategies that you used on TOEFL.

Writing Task 2 is short. It's only 250 words. You have to follow a simple, clear outline of 4 paragraphs that will be applicable to every Task 2 question.

Basic requirements for what to write:

-Intro : 4 sentences- introduce the topic, introduce the two opinions, and your thesis statement (main idea of your essay)

DO NOT overthink this. You don't have time to come up with a complicated thesis statement. You only have 40 minutes. Your thesis statement can be simple. You need to impress the examiner in the body of the essay.

Body: Topic sentence, reason, specific examples

Give more specific reasons for the main point of the paragraph and VERY specific examples and details about the reason. Every sentence must give the examiner new information. Don't say the same thing over and over.

Being specific gets you high scores in every category except for grammar.

Conclusion: It can be short. Just give a summary of your opinion and then give your opinion about the future.

Most of your effort and time go into the body of the essay.
