Double words in a sentence look weird at first glance and may even confuse the reader. This certainly is an awkward construction, but today we’ll tackle another pair of double words: the double that. When you see the double that in a sentence, you are actually seeing two clauses working together to form that complete thought.( Remember that a clause has both a subject and a verb.) And the first that, is usually a subordinating conjunction. And the second that is a different part of speech. The second that can be demonstrative adjective (determiner), a pronoun, or an adverb. Examples are given.\n
