Romulus created the Roman Senate, Numa created the Roman calendar, the cult of the Vestal Virgins, the office of Pontifex Maximus, the closest thing to a Roman Pope. All the Roman kings are mostly legendary, but it’s interesting to see the Romans themselves acknowledge the paradox of Rome the violent conqueror and Rome the architect of civilization.\n
