Polar molecular solids are crystalline solids with a permanent dipole moment due to differences in electronegativity between atoms. These solids have strong dipole-dipole interactions, lower melting and boiling points compared to ionic or metallic solids, and are typically soluble in polar solvents like water. They are poor conductors of electricity due to their lack of free ions or electrons. Examples of polar molecular solids include HCl, SO2, and NH3.

The electrostatic attraction between the positive and negative ends of a molecule creates a stable structure, resulting in distinct physical properties. Applications include pharmaceuticals, food industry, and chemical synthesis. Drugs are often polar molecular solids due to their dissolution and absorption in the human body, while sugar and citric acid are widely used due to their solubility and interaction with water. Polar molecular solids also act as intermediates or reactants in chemical reactions due to their polar nature.
Non-polar molecular solids are crystalline solids made up of molecules held together by weak vander Waals forces, specifically London dispersion forces and induced dipole-induced dipole interactions. These solids have lower melting and boiling points compared to polar molecular solids due to their weak intermolecular forces. They are formed by non-polar covalent bonds, with evenly distributed electrons, resulting in no partial charges on different parts of the molecule. Examples of non-polar molecular solids include carbon dioxide, methane, benzene, and diatomic gases. They have a symmetrical molecular structure and are typically soft, brittle, poor conductors of heat and electricity.
