The book examines the violent Chicago race riot of 1919, part of the broader \"Red Summer,\" a period of intense racial conflict across the U.S.

While researching for the book, he interviewed eyewitnesses, including John Turner Harris, who saw the tragic killing of Eugene Williams that sparked the Chicago riot. his research also explored the racial tensions in Chicago's stockyards, housing, and labor markets, as well as police brutality and political strife between African Americans and Irish Americans. These themes underscored how race relations and violence shaped not only Chicago but also his understanding of American history, drawing from my experiences growing up in Detroit during times of racial conflict.
