The book tells the remarkable true story of Janina Mehlberg, a Polish Jewish mathematician who assumed the false identity of a Polish Christian countess during World War II. Under this disguise, she joined the Polish resistance, negotiated with Nazi officials, and smuggled food, medicine, and messages into and out of the Majdanek concentration camp. Extensive research across nine countries verified her extraordinary efforts to aid Polish prisoners, all while keeping her true identity hidden.\n
