If the chemical causes mutations that restore the bacteria’s ability to synthesize histidine (His⁺), it is considered mutagenic. While the test is used primarily to screen for mutagenicity, it is also a valuable tool in identifying potential carcinogens, as most mutagens detected by the Ames test are also cancer-causing agents.\n
