We will begin by reviewing the three steps to adding or subtracting decimals. We will line the decimal values up vertically using the decimal points. We will fill in any missing digits with zeros. We will add as if they were whole numbers. We will place the decimal point in the sum vertically lining it up. We will then review the two rules for adding rational numbers. The SAME signs rule where we add the absolute values and keep the sign. The DIFFERENT signs rule where we subtract the smaller absolute value from the larger and keep the sign of the larger. Student practice is embedded for each of the rules. Exemplar solutions are modeled and explained.\n
