During the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands, Butter’s father sought to protect the family by obtaining Ecuadorian passports through Muñoz Borrero, who defied his government’s orders and continued issuing visas to Jews. Though the family was deported before the documents arrived, the passports ultimately reached them in the Westerbork transit camp and changed their status to “exchange Jews,” giving them value to the Nazis. This led to their eventual transfer to Bergen-Belsen and, after 11 horrific months, to a rare prisoner exchange that brought them to safety in Switzerland. Tragically, Butter’s father died en route. Irene was separated from her mother and brother for 18 months before reuniting in the U.S. She credits the Ecuadorian consul’s bravery with saving her family’s lives and worked to ensure he was honored as a Righteous Among the Nations at Yad Vashem in 2011.\n
