At age 27, White was sent by Chase Manhattan Bank to manage its Saigon branch during the chaotic final days of the Vietnam War. Tasked with keeping the branch open and, if possible, evacuating its senior Vietnamese staff, White had no plan, only his instincts and the authority of a Chase business card. When U.S. Ambassador Graham Martin refused to help evacuate Vietnamese employees—citing South Vietnamese laws against issuing exit visas—White found a loophole: he legally adopted the staff and their families as his own, enabling him to evacuate 113 people. He accompanied them through refugee camps in the Philippines, Guam, and California before resettling them in New York, where Chase provided jobs. After carrying the story with him for 45 years, White found his voice through a Columbia University writing group and crafted the memoir as narrative nonfiction—true stories told with the tools of fiction. He ultimately found an agent and publisher by framing his book as the tale of an ordinary man rising to extraordinary circumstances. The result is a compelling and heroic account of moral courage during a moment of historical crisis.\n
