Annemarie Carrigan is a shining example of what can be accomplished when this theme is taken to heart. She is an actor and writer, living with Down syndrome, and her story was shared by Joey Travolta and his company, Inclusion Films, as part of the annual celebration.

While growing up, Annemarie felt alone and isolated because of her condition. “What I learned is everyone, including me, needs to accept themselves,” she explained. “It’s been a struggle for me because all throughout my childhood I often isolated myself from people and the reality that came with interacting with them.”

Being an advocate for herself led Annemarie to a lead role in the documentary film, “Normie”, where she discovered ways of accepting the reality of her situation while also realizing that she was not alone.

Annemarie has also worked with Inclusion Films on Public Service Announcements for the “Delivering Jobs Campaign” (Autism Speaks, Special Olympics and Best Buddies) in their efforts to encourage employment opportunities. While being interviewed by Joey Travolta during this project, he asked her what her dream job was. Annemarie shared that she wanted to be a “hard hitting journalist.”

Watch and see how Joey’s interview turns into an opportunity for Annemarie to write a review/personal response for a film Joey had recently produced called “Carol of the Bells”, a beautiful story of acceptance and inclusion. (Her compelling review inspired the creation of this video.)

Now this Dallas, Texas gal is a thriving, multi-talented artist, pursuing her dreams, and has clearly decided there are no limits to what she can accomplish.

Inclusion Films was started in 2007 by veteran filmmaker Joey Travolta and teaches both the hard and soft skills of filmmaking to individuals with developmental differences in five dedicated production studios across California. In addition to their workshops, they travel the country doing short film camps for children and teens with autism. The neurodiverse production team that has been trained by Inclusion Films is available for hire - where they work side by side with veteran filmmakers. The ongoing goal of Joey Travolta and Inclusion Films’ film training programs is to continue to encourage and enable employment of individuals with developmental differences.
