That said, it’s unlikely to be the only language you’ll hear on the street. In fact, Mandarin is just one of eight different dialect groups that are spoken in China. Interestingly, all the Chinese dialect groups use the same written system. They just sound different. So someone who speaks only Cantonese will be able to read the same newspaper as someone who speaks only Mandarin.
