Zulus make up the largest ethnic group, and 23 percent of South Africans speak Zulu as their primary language. About 11 percent of the population is European in origin, of which 60 percent is Afrikaner and the other 40 percent are British or from other parts of Europe. About 10 percent are of mixed race called coloreds. The Indian community represents more than 1 percent of the population and lives mainly in the KwaZulu-Natal and in urban townships and older cities.
