EngageNY Grade 5 ELA Module 3b: Considering Perspectives and Supporting Opinions: Balancing Competing Needs in Canada
The three units in Module 3B ask fifth-graders to consider multiple perspectives about using natural resources in Canada. In the first unit, young scholars study how hundreds of years ago, the Inuit people used the natural resources in the Arctic to meet their needs. Unit 2 looks at how Canadians today use these resources and how such use has changed the environment. In the final unit, pupils read opposing opinions about a proposed mining project on Baffin Island and craft an editorial that argues for or against the mining project.
