EngageNY Grade 7 ELA Module 2b: Working with Evidence Identity and Transformation: Then and Now
Grade 7 ELA Module 2B examines how society attempts to define individuals and how they try to define themselves. In Unit 1, seventh graders read narratives to gain background knowledge of the concept of personal identity. They learn how to identify central ideas, analyze how an author develops claims, and how the sections of the text interact to form ideas. In unit 2, tweens do a close reading of George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion and follow Eliza Doolittle’s identity transformation. Unit 3 has class members read and discuss literary and informational text to analyze how personal identity development is influenced by media and advertising presentations of gender roles and stereotypes. For a final performance task, scholars analyze a current print ad then create a counter ad that does not rely on stereotypes.
