United Nations Teacher Resources

The United Nations strives to promote international collaboration in the midst of universal challenges, struggles, and triumphs. But how did the United Nations begin? Who is included? And what is the greatest challenge they face today?

Teach social studies students about the creation, roles, and purview of the United Nations with Lesson Planet's selection of teacher-curated materials. History classes can begin a unit on the 1942 Declaration of the United Nations, or answer comprehension questions about the Charter of the United Nations with a reading assignment. Additionally, they can role-play a United Nations meeting regarding an international treaty on accepting refugees after reading about the American rejection of the St. Louis in 1939, sending its passengers back to the Holocaust.

A lesson on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights prompts learners to compare the listed rights with those they enjoy as American students. Additionally, they can examine these rights with an activity in which they consider which of their rights they would be willing to give away.

Want to teach younger classes about the functions of the United Nations? Use an entertaining Sesame Street video featuring former Secretary-General of the United Nations and Nobel Prize winner Kofi Annan, which focuses on the importance of working together to achieve a common goal.
