Risk-Taking in the Classroom with Bill Selak — August 29, 2014

Take big risks. Reap big rewards.

That’s Bill Selak’s mantra, and something he exemplifies in his fourth-grade music classroom on a daily basis.

So what does risk-taking look like in Mr. Selak’s classroom? Well, it all started when he said yes to a student’s proposition to record a song he had written. According to Bill, it was “the moment when I realized technology could really transform my classroom.” They collaborated to create music using GarageBand, and soon after, other classrooms followed suit.

It’s all about creating a culture of risk-taking—and more importantly a “just go for it” mentality. Bill assures educators, “no matter what happens, students are growing, and you as a teacher are also growing. ”
