First graders identify the difference between a fluent and a non-fluent reader reads like and that the more often they read, they recognize words automatically. They pair up, read the story one at a time, and use a stop watch to time one another while reading the story. Finally, 1st graders hand in their recordings of their reading at the end of class and compare.
