What are the characteristics of life? Young biologists will try to grasp this concept as they feel hidden objects and try to categorize them. In an extremely hands-on activity, stations are set up around the classroom and groups rotate through, reach into the mystery boxes, then work together to determine what they are touching and whether it is biotic or abiotic (even though they may not yet have a strong handle on the vocabulary). There are a few typos on the handout, but the instructional activity is a strong introduction to the topic.
