Use famous orators of the past to teach rhetoric to your middle schoolers. In groups, they examine speeches by Malcolm X, Barack Obama, and John F. Kennedy, creating and presenting Wordsplashes to display keywords and their stance on civil rights. The class uses these presentations to learn more about the power of speech, eventually writing their own speech on the legacy they want to leave. There are ideas for debriefing and differentiation here, but no worksheet or guidelines to hand out are included.
