A resource this sparse could mislead you into thinking it's just plain thin. But in doing the activity, your young writers will embark on multiple-sentence writing. Use it for early practice with paragraph structure. What could be easier to write a first paragraph about than your best friend? Sentence starters like "The thing I like best about my friend is that she is ____." frame topic sentences. Then encourage authors to name three things the friend does that exemplify the characteristic quality from the topic sentence. ("She acts ____ when she ____." "She also shows that she is ____ when she ____.") You can then apply the model to characters in stories to extend the concept to writing about literature or biography. Plus you'll be building a strong classroom community!
