Comprehending Literary Text: Identifying Theme

“What is the theme of this poem?” Rather than strike fear into the hearts of your pupils, show them how to recognize the theme of a piece of literature. After a definition of this literary term, class members discuss insights they might want to pass on to their children. For guided practice, the class reads Margaret Walker’s poem, “Lineage,” and answers the provided questions. Consider extending the lesson with independent practice exercises using poems like Pat Mora’s “Sonrisas.”
