Cookie Mining

Seventh graders estimate how many chips are in their cookies. Then, using their toothpicks, 7th graders should attempt to extract the chips from the cookie, trying not to break apart the cookie. Cookies should stay flat on a napkin (explain to them that a mountain cannot be picked up and flipped over). After they have "mined" for a few minutes, ask if they want to change their original estimate. .

I have found Lesson Planet to be an invaluable adjunct to the scope and sequence my district follows. I have used many of the worksheets as homework to reinforce what I have already gone over in class and to help students gain additional confidence on some of the more challenging lessons.
