The narrator of this short video shows viewers how to determine the theme or themes of a story by examining words, images, or symbols that are repeated in a text. Using Ambrose Bierce’s short story “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” as an example, the narrator models how to highlight figurative language and images, and how to consider what this word choice might mean to the story. Although the approach detailed can be used with any text and can stand alone, the video is part of a series, and would work best after class members have read Bierce’s story and if shown in sequence with the others.
