  • Include works by Maya Angelou ("Still I Rise," "Black Family Pledge," etc.) in the unit
Classroom Considerations

  • The packet was designed for the 2007 Black History Month celebration, but is appropriate for any year's celebration, for any study of African American poets, or of poetry in general
  • The exercises are not sequenced and teachers may use some or all of the activities
  • The poems are groups by theme
  • Although the packet features an image of Maya Angelou, none of her poems are included
