Elements of Literature: Theme

Here's a mini-lesson that uses jokes to model the difference between a story's theme and the writer's reason for writing the story. Class members examine two jokes, one of which contains a central insight about life. Pupils then search for jokes that contain this sort of central idea or theme. It could be used to introduce a longer study of this literary element.
