Emission Spectra Lab

In this chemistry lab activity, 11th graders identify the identity of the unknown element in the gas discharge tube and the identity of the unknown metal salt. Then, they describe how colors are produced by the two methods used in the lab. Finally, students imagine that they are forensic scientists given the task of identifying an unknown substance found at a crime scene. They select the method that would provide the most reliable results.
