Establishing a Farm in 1869
Sixth graders read an account in the Texas Almanac and Emigrant's Guide to Texas (1869 edition) about the establishment of a small farm. It is intended to be used within a unit on the homesteader's frontier because it gives so many insights into the life of farmers of the period. The tone is boosterish, and students are asked to determine whether such a tone is justified. Students assume the role of a farmer who took the advice of the writer, started a farm on the plains, and failed.
