Family Rhythm Words

Students practice clapping patterns. They listen as the teacher reads the poem "What is a Family" by Lucia Kemp Henry. Students find a steady beat to clap the poem to. They are asked if they can identify the long and short beats. Students identify the short and long notes by gluing paper pattern blocks on top of the words. They brainstorm a list of family members.
