Identity figurative language with an activity that looks closely at the poem "The Final Deployment" by Anna Protkos. Scholars work collaboratively to examine the poem and determine how it uses similes, alliteration, metaphors, personification, or hyperboles.

Instructional Ideas

  • Make copies of example charts and direct pupils to attach them to their interactive English language arts notebook or binder
  • Invite learners to create their own figurative language examples 
  • Gather a variety of poems that highlight different types of figurative language for class members to browse when time permits    
Classroom Considerations

  • Poems listed on the example charts are not included; however, the examples provided offer a good example of the types of figurative language 
  • Not every literary device is represented in the example poem

  • Charts contain a lot of information in only a few pages 
  • Font is clear and easy to read
