Great Deserts of the World
Sixth graders take a vicarious journey across the world's deserts and illustrate ways in which they are formed. Once they examine the plants and animals of the environment, they list how these have adapted in order to survive in an inhospitable environment. On maps, 6th graders locate deserts and present them to third graders. Finally, students research specific deserts and create travel brochures and write "desert haiku."
