Jack Prelutsky's If not for the Cat is used as an example of haiku poetry. Students determine if examples read aloud fit the 17 syllable criteria. They brainstorm interesting adjectives to use in their writing, and compose a haiku poem. Suggestions for integrated curriculum topics that could be used as haiku topics are included. Good instructional activity!
