Two podcasts introduce scholars to geometry basics (types of polygons, lines of symmetry, and congruence) and finding area of simple shapes. Be sure learners comprehend these concepts before moving on. What foods can they think of that are geometrically shaped? Learners will be happy to hear you will be applying area concepts to pizza; small groups use graphic organizers to plan toppings and calculate the total area of their finished pizza (with toppings). They assemble and bake the pizzas, discussing how they calculated shape areas and how certain shapes could be combined to make other shapes. There are interactive online practice links which can be used before or after the pizza activity.
