How Does Scale Factor Affect the Areas and Perimeters of Similar Figures

Are all the measurements scalable? Pupils work in groups or alone to determine whether figures are similar and find any missing side lengths. Then, they calculate the perimeters and areas of the figures. Finally, using the measurements, they find the ratio of perimeters and the ratio of area and compare them to the scale factor.

Instructional Ideas
  • Review how to determine whether two rectangles and two triangles are similar
  • Redraw the similar figures on the board
Classroom Considerations
  • Individuals should know how to calculate perimeter and area
  • Classmates need to know the relationship between side lengths of similar figures
  • Contains tables to organize the measurements
  • Includes suggestions for assessments
  • The mathematical formulas in the teacher resource are not visible
