Interpreting The Story: Flashback Technique

Who is Drake and why is he hiding under a car? The flashback technique used to open Drake Bennett’s short story, “Coward,” is sure to hook readers into a tale about a four year old who fears getting a shot at the doctor’s office. Class members note the sensory details Bennett uses to bring his story to life and examine how the flashback affects their response. Pre- and post-reading activities, critical thinking questions, extensions, as well as a reading check, vocabulary list, and a comma usage exercise are included.
