Introducing Standard Deviation

Add the concept of standard deviation to your class's statistical tool box of measures of variation. The activity begins by reviewing the measures of central tendency including mean, median, and mode, as well as range and interquartile range as ways of describing sets of data. Then it introduces standard deviation as a measure of spread that takes into account all of the data points. Using the graphing calculator makes the computations easier and directions on how to do so are included. Discuss how the value of the standard deviation is related to the spread of the data points. Then hand out the practice resource sheet and assess for understanding.
