There's nothing like a good roller coaster...especially when it comes to drafting a novel! Authors use the roller coaster visual as they create the set-up, inciting incident, and rising action of their stories. Once they have figured out their central conflict, they move into the process of building the story around it. Using a familiar book, model the roller coaster by having students help paraphrase aspects of the plot. Then, workshop partners apply the process to their own novels, acting as soundboards and support for one another. No worksheets or visuals included.
