Joining Methods for Timber

Seventh graders are introduced to different ways of joining pieces of timber through a demonstration. Once glue has dried, groups select the joint they believe is strongest and explain why. Groups string all the joints together and pull until a joint breaks. They re-string and pull again, continuing until only the strongest joint remains.

Lesson Planet is a great source for lesson plans that have been used successfully by other teachers. I've adopted and adapted so many of the lessons found through lessonplanet.com to suit the needs of my classes for the past two years, and have saved so much time not having to re-invent the wheel. Thanks to Lesson Planet, I've been able to evolve within this ever-evolving profession!
