If your class is participating in National Novel Writing Month, or just doing some creative writing, they should know setting is imperative to a story's mood. Kids begin this activity with a writing prompt to describe places that are personal to them. Then, they discuss settings and sub-settings within a novel, referencing the worksheet (not included but easily found online). After practicing together, learners write settings in a variety of moods and even make up some moods of their own. They work on using description to set a mood, finally applying the skill to their own novels.
